Virgin Mary Axion Esti

According to the Christian tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary, Axion Esti that is placed in the sanctuary of the Protato in Karyes at Mount Athos is considered a miraculous icon from the time the Archangel Gabriel chanted at Her presence, the angelic hymn for the first time.

At the end of the 10th century, the icon was located in a monk’s cell near Karyes. While the Abbot was being away to a vigil, his servant provided shelter to an unknown monk passing by. Using his finger, the unknown monk engraved on a stone slab, a "new" verse of the famous hymn of Saint Kosmas the Poet that started with "Axion estin os alithos" and requested that the hymn is chanted in this way by all Orthodox Christians. The monks of Athos sent the engraved stone slab to the Patriarch and transferred the icon to the Protato, the base of the holy Superintendence of Mount Athos.

In memory of this miracle a yearly ritual is observed which was initially taking place at the Cell of the miracle.
