Christ Pantocrator

The Monastery of Preveli is well known for its contribution to the liberation battles of Crete, since its construction in the early 11th century. It is divided into the Lower Monastery - abandoned due to multiple looting - and into the Rear Monastery of Theologos, which functions as a male monastery and is open to visitors. In the Rear Monastery and more specifically at the two-aisled temple of the monastery dedicated to Saint John the Theologian and the Annunciation, we find one more icon depicting Christ as Pantocrator. The icon that was hagiographed in the mid 19th century, is located in the temple of the monastery famous for its exquisite artworks, and is attributed to the artist Mercurios, representative of the Cretan School.

This icon is inspired by the icon of Christ that is housed at the Holy Monastery of Preveli in Crete. It composes an interesting representation of Christ, the creation of a Cretan hagiographer and was elaborated in the 17th century.
